Tirana Monuments & memorials

Tirana's monuments record two very different pasts. The equestrian statue of Skanderbeg, the fifteenth-century commander who held off Ottoman armies for twenty-five years, stands at the centre of the square that carries his name and is the national symbol.

The rest are about the dictatorship. Postbllok, at the entrance to Blloku, sets a genuine concrete bunker beside a section of the Berlin Wall and a pillar from the Spac labour camp. Bunkers themselves are the most persistent monument of all: several hundred thousand were built across the country, and the ones left in Tirana now serve as cafes, storage and museum entrances.
