The Museum of Natural Sciences was founded in 1948 and holds specimens gathered from 1900 onwards, which makes it the sole institution of its kind in Albania an…The Museum of Natural Sciences was founded in 1948 and holds specimens gathered from 1900 onwards, which makes it the sole institution of its kind in Albania and the country's centre for the study of its own biodiversity. It carries the name of Sabiha Kasimati, the biologist executed by the regime in 1951, and sits inside the university quarter on the southern side of the centre.

The seven pavilions are arranged to follow the evolution of living things, with more than three thousand pieces on display and thousands more in the research store: corals and Indian Ocean shells, insects, fish, reptiles up to the large sea turtles, birds including the Dalmatian pelican that the museum singles out, and mammals from African monkeys to the forest bear and a whale. It opens on weekdays only.
