Museums and Galleries in Tirana
Tirana's museums are dominated by the communist period and are much better than most visitors expect. Bunk'Art 1, in a five-storey nuclear bunker built for the party leadership on the edge of the city, and Bunk'Art 2, in a smaller bunker beside Skanderbeg Square, are the essential pair. The House of Leaves, the former secret police surveillance headquarters, is the quietest and the most unsettling.
The National History Museum on Skanderbeg Square covers everything from Illyrian antiquity onward under its mosaic facade. The National Gallery of Arts holds the socialist realist collection alongside contemporary Albanian work.
