At its middle lies the artificial lake the park is often named after, dug originally to control flooding and now the most visited stretch of water in the city, with boats on it in summer.

The park is laid out for use rather than display: a circuit that fills with runners and walkers morning and evening, sports pitches, several children's playgrounds and an open-air theatre named for the actor Mirush Kabashi. It is managed by the municipal parks and recreation agency. The northern edge touches the student quarter, which puts it within walking distance of the centre.
