The bakery is the most useful shop in Tirana. Byrektore sell byrek, layered pastry filled with cheese, spinach, meat or pumpkin, cut from a wide tray and sold by weight, and they open before dawn for people going to work. A generous piece and a coffee costs less than almost anything else you can eat.
The same counters carry bread, sweet pastries and syrup sweets like bakllava and kadaif. Every neighbourhood has several, with the densest run around Pazari i Ri. Most sell out of the popular fillings by mid-morning, so go early if you want the spinach.
